Gracie Lou came to us as an emergency protective custody foster after an incident with her previous owners. lovely dog

My Story

About a month after losing our first foster, who was a hospice foster, we got a call from our foster coordinator with the American Bullmastiff Rescue Association asking for a favor. A friend of hers at PAWS had contacted her asking her if she knew a foster who could quickly take in a pit bull. Apparently, her previous owners were transients, and after a drunk and/or high trip they did quite a number on her while she was pregnant, enough so for a bystander to call the police. By the time they got there and arrested him, he had hit her, kicked her, picker her up and slammed her against the ground several times, and when they got there he was kicking her in the abdomen. She spent the next couple months essentially living in a veterinary office starting in the ICU to recover from the beating then weaning her pups, of whom only 3 of 6 were viable. Luckily, all the pups found forever homes!

During this time, however, her owner was sending people to PAWS trying to find her and "adopt" her to get her back, which is why we were eventually contacted: to get her out of there and keep her safe. So we did.

From day one, she was happy, sweet, and just wanted to be cuddled and loved. We were wondering if they had given us the right dog because you would never be able to tell she had an abusive past. That's one of the great thing about dogs. She immediately got along with our two dachshunds (and as any dachshund owner would attest to, they owned her as soon as she came in the door). She quickly made herself at home and accepted her new pack.

While she is still technically a foster, we really aren't actively looking for a new place because she's so wonderful to have around and so happy to have us. If we find someone who can love her and take care of her as good as or better as we can, we would happily give her the chance at living the best life possible. Our one hesitation is that if we keep her we just don't have the room to foster more dogs so it's kind of a catch. Meanwhile, however, as far as we're concerned she has a home, and always will as long as we're around.
